RESEARCH SUPERVISOR (TISSUE CULTURE)

Recruitment Type: National (2-year renewable contract)

RESPONSIBILITIES

Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:
Assist in production of quarterly predetermined number of plantlets through rapid propagation from yam explants using conventional tissue culture;
Assist in production of predetermined minimum number of virus-free clean stock plantlets of at least 3 varieties in the first 6 months and subsequently on a bi-monthly basis, including documentation on their certification using approved protocols;
Assist in maintenance of aseptic tissue culture conditions and ensuring minimum contamination in cultures;
Report on plantlets of selected yam varieties produced using bar code labeling;
Assist in submission of monthly report and populating the online high ratio propagation database www.yamhrponline.iita.org on the details of seed yam produced including genotype, quantity, age, cycle number and disease status;
Assist in submission of documentation on flow of plantlets to end users monthly;
Assist in daily and weekly report on the functioning of the conventional tissue culture facilities;
Report any malfunction of materials and equipment;

QUALIFICATIONS
HND/BSc in Agriculture, Biology, Microbiology, Physiology, Biochemistry or related courses with at least two (2) years’ relevant experience performing similar role.

COMPETENCIES
Ideal Candidate must:
Have good knowledge of contamination reduction strategies, including cleanliness and familiarity with aseptic and safe tissue culture laboratory practices.
Have good knowledge on use of computer for data reporting;
Be ready to work in a team and have a good sense of interpersonal relationship.

SENIOR RESEARCH SUPERVISOR

RESPONSIBILITIES
Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:
Assist in establishment of maize and legume crops regeneration and characterization;
Assist in coordinating and supervising students’ field experiments and training activities;
Assist in conducting field experiments including all aspects of data collection, management and analysis;
Assist in supervising harvesting and postharvest handling of seeds crops;
Assist in supervising general field activities;
Perform any their duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATION
HND/B.Sc in Plant Science, Agronomy, Crop Production, General Agriculture or any other related fields with at least three (3) years’ relevant experience performing similar role.

RESEARCH SUPERVISOR (BIOREACTOR)

RESPONSIBILITIES
Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:
Assist in quarterly production of a minimum of predetermined plantlets through rapid propagation from yam explants using Temporary Immersion Bioreactors system (TIBs);
Assist in the maintenance of aseptic tissue culture conditions and ensuring zero of strict minimum contamination in cultures;
Report on plantlets of selected yam varieties produced using bar code labelling, submission of monthly report and populating the online high ratio propagation database www.yamhrponline.iita.org on the details of seed yam produced including genotype, quantity, age and disease status
Assist in submission of documentation on flow of plantlets to end users monthly;
Assist in daily and weekly report on the functioning of the TIBs facilities;
Report any malfunction of materials and equipment

FIELD ASSISTANT/DRIVER - 2 POSITIONS

RESPONSIBILITIES
Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:
Assist in driving YIIFSWA-II project vehicles to convey authorized staffs and visiting partners;
Drive vehicles on errands for project activities and assist in the execution of projects activities in lab, screen house, glass house and field;
Assist in land preparation, planting, crop management, harvesting, storage and data collection;
Assist the day to day maintenance of project Vehicles (cleaning of inside and outside, daily/regular check-up of the engine oil level, water level, the battery and the air filter etc.)
Ensure vehicle documents are up to date and comply with minimum security operating standards (MSOS);
Report any malfunction of the YIIFSWA vehicle under his care to the immediate supervisor;
Assist in recording trip details in the vehicle logbook including filling of the monthly balance sheet;
Assist in office duties such as photocopying, sorting of documents etc.
Any other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.

QUALIFICATION
O’Level plus a valid driver’s license with at least five (5) years’ relevant experience performing similar role in an International Organization.

COMPETENCIES
Ideal Candidate must:
Have the ability to work with staff of different ethnic groups and nationalities;
Be computer literate in using tablet;
Have good communication skills and fluent in writing, reading and spoken English;
Be ready to work longer hours/weekend if needs be;
Have good driving skills.

RESEARCH SUPERVISOR (SEED)

RESPONSIBILITIES
Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:
Assist in quarterly production of a minimum predetermined number of seedlings through hardening of in-vitro plantlets;
Assist in supervising the transfer of hardened plantlets and their planting in Aeroponics system;
Work closely with the research technicians in charge of Aeroponics on survival rate and assure replacements and assist in vine cuttings from Aeroponics;
Report on the operational conditions using approved protocols;
Assist in maintenance of aseptic Post flask management conditions and ensuring non contamination or correct genotype labeling among plantlets and seedlings;
Report on plantlets and seedlings of selected yam varieties hardening and supply to Aeroponics using bar code labeling;
Assist in submission of monthly report and populating the online high ratio propagation database www.yamhrponline.iita.org on the details of seed yam produced including genotype, quantity, age, cycle number and disease status;
Assist in submission of documentation on flow of seedlings to end users monthly;
Assist in daily and weekly report on the functioning of the post-flask management facilities;
Report any malfunction of materials and equipment;
Perform any their duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATION
HND/B.Sc in Agriculture, Biology, Microbiology, Physiology, Biochemistry or related courses with at least two (2) years’ relevant experience performing similar role.
